Hello again everyone! As promised from my intro posts, you will get to know me more as we continue on this blog journey together. So aside from loving fashion, I also love and care deeply for animals. I’m actually vegan and have been for a few years now. I mean being from Hawaii I feel like I grew up constantly surrounded by nature and have grown up appreciating all that mother nature has to offer us. Now, how this pertains to this blog post? Well, unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few months, Australia has been on fire and from it many people and animals have been displaced. It deeply saddens me whenever I see on my twitter timeline images of the devastation that is happening there. In particular, the poor koalas I have seen being hurt and/or lost their homes because of the fires. Just to spit some facts at y’all so you can be more aware of just how large of an issue this is: approximately 8,000 koalas have died in the fires which actually makes up about 1/3 of all the koalas in NSW. So yeah, that’s a lot of koalas gone. Now I also want to bring light to something that I also read about this event. The term “functionally extinct” has been thrown around in terms of koalas their future. What does it mean to be functionally extinct? Well I’m glad you asked because it refers to when a species doesn’t hav enough members to reproduce or have a role in their ecosystem. So this term has been tied to koalas and I just want to say that it is very important to note that koalas, although in danger, are not yet functionally extinct (just wanna throw that out there. You can check National Geographic if you don’t believe me).
ANYWAYS, I have also seen posts about how to help a koala so I wanna help spread the message and make a quick PSA. So if you happen to be in Australia and stumble upon a koala in need of help, do not feed them water by hand. You have to put it in a bowl or some kind of object that can hold water and let them drink the water themselves, similar to how a dog does. Forcing the water down their throats could potentially cause them more harm and kill them due to the fact that the smoke from the fire could’ve damaged their lungs allowing for water to leak into them. I just wanted to spread awareness to this fact because I understand that people mean well when feeding koalas water but it’s still important to know how to do it properly so that more koala lives aren’t lost. So just for good measure repeat after me, DO NOT FORCE WATER DOWN A KOALA’S THROAT. Thank you :).
So yeah, this is my post for this week. Yeah it has nothing to do with fashion, but it’s another subject that I care a lot about and want to spread awareness for so deAl wItH iT. Remember I’m here to give advice so here’s my advice for this week, BE A GOOD PERSON AND RESPECT ALL LIVING THINGS. Of course though if something interesting in the fashion world comes up, I’ll make sure to talk about but until then….peace and love.
haha just kidding. Btw if you want to find out how you can help out, there are plenty of organizations you can search up and donate to. My personal favorite is the Australian Red Cross. So go on out there and be a good person. Alright nowwww I’m done.
Peace,
Sage ❤
I have never paid the news outside of California, so I was really surprised that animals outside of California had been suffering from such innocuous people. Did people really force water down the throat of these poor koalas? This is why animal protection service is a thing, but it is sad how there are not a lot of regulations on animal treatment behind the eyes of legal law or pure ignorance. Koalas are such adorable creatures. It is a shame that so many of them died from the fire. Perhaps they might make it to the next extinction species list if nothing is done to save them or to educate the people on how to treat these koalas better. Perhaps I might consider myself as someone who lived under the rocks. I have never seen koalas before in my life. Perhaps a change I could do would be to look at sources outside the media news, which are highly regulated by our government.
I would like to expand that it is best if we don’t feed water to any animals by hand; the list includes cats, dogs, rabbits, raccoons, or any other animals living near within your community. For one, your hand may contain some pathogens, which could be destructive to the animal’s health. The amount of virus accumulated within a day is very extensive.
A questionable topic or concern I have is the pain tolerance of the koala and their mental capacity after experiencing such trauma of the fire destroying their habitat. Another curious question I have is whether the koala have a temporary shelter for such a tragic incident and the quality of the shelter provided. I am sure there would be some GoFundMe donations occurring for the survival of these koalas. However, the institutions benefiting from such service should be regarded and recognized.
It also pains me that animals are losing their habitats. Humans have taken so much land to build roads and homes, destroying other animal’s habitats at the same time. Nowadays, the surviving animals or animals with the highest chance of survival within the cities or domain of humans would be domesticated pets like dogs and cats. One should notice that different breeds are favored and thrived while unlikeable breeds slowly disappear due to their lack of popularity. When humans choose which animals to take in as a pet, the deciding factors would be their cuteness or attractive features, their trainability, and the amount of barks or loud sounds they provide. A lot of times, these humans regard their pets as lower intelligence beings than humans. Hence, the ways humans train the pets are pretty inhumane. Since humans are the pet’s main source of food, humans use the tactic of positive reinforcement to train their pets. For example, their puppy could only receive a treat only if he learned how to sit down or give his or her owner his or her paw. This is one of the contributing factors that led to the poor treatment of animals. There are reasons why campaigns are made that favor adoption over the purchasing of pets.

o! Wassup, Sage?
After stumbling upon your blog for this week, I was very moved by your message. Being from the trenches of East Los Angeles, I’ve hardly seen any form of wildlife in my days. But ever since I’ve left for UC Davis, I’ve encountered more species of animals, which I have grown some type of soft spot for them. It always saddens me to learn about animal deaths. Whether it’s in a movie or real life, I always seem to be a little Sad Boy when I witness an animal’s death. They don’t deserve the things that we silly human beings put them through. They’re just out there trying to live their best life while, unknowingly, their habitats are being destroyed because of us. We need to be better!
I appreciate the fact that you’re out here giving facts and tips on how to help out. What I would like to know, though, is how can a common human like myself, who is too broke to travel to Australia and help out firsthand, help out in the comfort of their own home? I’m tired of just feeling useless at home while all this mess is going on. It makes me a Sad Boy all over again. I have been trying to pay my due diligence and do what I can. I have cut back on my plastic waste. I’ve even thought about switching my sick lowrider for a Prius, just to try and save this planet. We all have to do what we can in order to try and prolong the existence of this planet. Because if we don’t, we’re all smoked. You feel me?
One more question that I have is, what will be done to prevent these poor koalas from eventually going functionally extinct? We must take action. I know there’s some type of science invented in which we can reproduce more koalas. I’ve seen so many Jurassic Park movies that I’m starting to believe the time is near in which we can bring back any extinct species back. Then again, I’m just a delusional dude from East Los Angeles who has hope for humanity. I always try to see the good in our world. I’m just a very positive person. I always see the bright side of everything. However, this is one situation that I don’t see a bright side for. Not trying to sound like a Sad Boy, but I do not see us surviving the horrors of climate change. Sooner or later, worse things will come. It’s time for us to wake up and witness the reality.
Sorry for going on this endless run in response to your post, Sage, but I think this is a serious issue in which we must attempt to resolve it before it gets worse. So for whoever is reading this, do whatever you are able to try and save mankind. Sad Boy out!
