Hey there! I read your post about the plastic ban that just happened in New York and I have to say that I am very excited to hear that more places are beginning to get rid of single use plastic. Back home in Hawaii, I have participated in many beach cleanups and I can tell you that the amount of plastic you find on beaches now a days is insane. I’ve always been very passionate about the environment because at the end of the day we do only have one Earth and we should really begin to fix our ways to preserve it. So I think this is great that we are taking one more step as a society to reduce the use of plastic. I understand that plastic is more convenient in the sense that it’s already there at the store, but when we all make our simple contribution of just bringing a reusable bag (there’s some pretty cute ones out there fyi so you can be grocery shopping in style lol) or using paper bags instead (it literally only costs a few cents), it really does help.
I also saw that you mentioned that you are understanding of those with disabilities that might need to use single use plastic such as plastic bendy straws. I completely sympathize and understand that sometimes it has to be used, I mean I’d be a hypocrite if I said I NEVER use plastic straws anymore. I’ve forgotten my reusable straw at home before and in turn had to use a plastic straw. We all make mistakes but what matters is our intentions and our efforts at the end of the day. I think some people are a bit extreme when it comes to never using any plastic because although we are slowly changing our ways it is still inevitable. I’ve seen people on social media get grilled for using a plastic cup, which I think is extreme and a bit ridiculous. Like I said, we aren’t perfect and using plastic sometimes is inevitable and there’s a difference between educating people on their ways and just simply being rude. We need to strive to educate people politely rather than “call people out” on every single thing that they do wrong because that too can make people not want to change their habits. Anyways, what I wanted to add on to what you said was that lucky for us they make reusable straws that are made bent or flexible enough to be bent so now almost anyone can use a reusable straw :)!
So yeah, your post was refreshing to read about and although we still got a long way to go before we can fix all the harm we’ve caused Earth, I think these steps are good news and small steps are better than no steps. So to everyone who may see this response, try to make your own small contributions to saving our planet!
