Hey everyone! So by the title of this post you can probably tell that this week’s post is going to be a serious one. As y’all may have heard, the coronavirus has started spreading around the U.S. and as of recently it has reached Orange County which is pretty close to me since I live in LA. For me this whole situation has been stressful and worrisome to read about because I feel like it keeps spreading and not stopping anytime soon. I am also someone who easily stresses about my health even if something feels slightly off so yeah this is pretty scary right now.
What sparked this anxiety in the first place was the fact that Orange County just declared a coronavirus emergency. However, I was relieved to find out that they only declared this after one person tested positive, but has since them recovered fully. With further research and reading I also discovered that there had been a proposal to move coronavirus patients to a facility in Costa Mesa. This facility is called the Fairview Developmental Center and it was proposed to use this a a coronavirus quarantine site. I was glad to also see that Orange county was supportive of Costa Mesa in opposition of this proposal by the state and federal government because I don’t think moving patients around helps to preserve the health of everyone else. Like really think about it. It sounds to me that they want to just dump these coronavirus infected people to a different area just to get it out of theirs and that just sounds wrong to me. I mean if I was apart of the county that they wanted to move coronavirus patients to, I wouldn’t want them moved to my county either.
Aside from this incident, I also want to quickly touch on the fact that, since the coronavirus came about, some people have started to use this event as a way to make racist remarks towards Asians. I find this to be so rude and uncalled because this virus, which for one is affecting them more than us, is not an excuse to be racist. There have been Asians here in America that make signs to tell people that they aren’t infected which is just so sad that they have to do that in the first place. I also saw tweets from people trying to justify this racism by saying that when there was the Ebola outbreak everyone made jokes about it too. Although this is true, I don’t think justifying racism with other instances of racism solves anything. It’s not a competition about who had it more worse. As minorities, we should all be working towards fixing the issue of racism and calling people out when things like this occur and not having the attitude of “oh but we had it worse.”
So yeah, the coronavirus is a scary situation currently and I hope that it doesn’t become a huge outbreak here in the U.S. That’s all I have for this week. Be kind and respectful to other people and look after yourselves, especially for you health (wash your hands y’all). Peace!
