Alright so if y’all noticed, this post is not gonna be posted at midnight. i’M sORrY. I had a long week this week and just passed out yesterday so the post didn’t get published. Okay….. now that that’s out of the way, as promised, this week’s blog post is going to be about FASHION *insert applause and cheering here*. So if y’all don’t know, this week was Paris Fashion Week. What is Paris Fashion Week? Well I’m glad you asked. Paris Fashion Week is basically a grand scale runway show where a variety of designers get to present their collection/designs for the season. For this particular post, I’m going to be focusing on a specific model, Gigi Hadid.
Now why is she important in particular? Well, if you have been living under a rock and have no idea who this person is, she’s a famous, celebrity model. Now where I’m going with this is tying fashion with the concept of nepotism. Nepotism, as defined by google, is “the practice among those in power or influence favoring relatives or friends, especially by giving them jobs.” Gigi Hadid , herself, comes from a fairly wealthy background (keep that in mind). Now let’s backtrack a little. Gigi has been modeling since she was two years old, but it wasn’t until she became a Victoria’s Secret Model that she really started to blow up. Now although she walked for such a well known brand, she was known for having a terrible walk, and if you know anything about fashion, you’ll know that a model’s walk is one of the most important things besides who they are wearing and representing. For years, Gigi was ridiculed by the public for her walk and the fact that she shouldn’t be as big of a model as she is because of it. It wasn’t until as of recently, during Paris Fashion Week, that I started to notice people actually COMPLIMENTING her on her improved walk. It was one tweet in particular that I saw that had sparked this idea for this post. In the tweet, the user mentions how she has nothing else to say but to compliment Gigi for her improved walk and the fact that she is aware of her status (nepotism) and how it does indeed give her an advantage in this industry that others might not have. I decided to do some more searching to make sure this tweet was true and did indeed find out that she is aware of her privilege and has spoken out about nepotism.
Honestly, I have to applaud her improving and speaking on this issue because there are so many celebrities now a days that simply don’t acknowledge the privilege and advantage they have in an industry because of their family background. For example, Kylie Jenner and her getting the title of “self made billionaire.” Now, I can appreciate the hustle, but I would not consider her “self made” because she is part of the Kardashian- Jenner family and that alone gives her such an advantage in the success of her makeup line. She didn’t have to build up from nothing; she was born into wealth. Anyways back to fashion, I’ve seen so many people who are quick to call themselves a model and who get opportunities to walk runways only because they came from a well known family and companies know that they’ll get more exposure if they have someone well known walk, which I think is a terrible and unfortunate aspect in the industry. Meanwhile, there are so many other talented, less well known people who strive to become models but don’t get the chance to because of nepotism.
Well, that’s my spiel for this week. Also, I hope y’all realize that this isn’t an attack on all wealthy people. Only the ones that use their privilege to their advantage and don’t care that they do or try to pretend that they don’t have privilege. So until next time guys, peace! ❤
